All east-coast native biases aside, one thing cannot be denied: the folks on the other side of the country know how to make some darn fine sandwiches. And lucky for us Seattleites, The Other Coast brings this town two vibrant cafes (one in Ballard, one on Capitol Hill) where an awesome sammie is pretty much a done deal. Both venues feature genial staff, a simple yet cozy ambiance and a butcher’s case displaying a well-stocked supply of tempting cheeses and meats.
Hungry patrons choose between custom sandwiches or seven- and fourteen-inch pre-made options on baguettes, multi-grain, sourdough or rye. Cold items range from The Hammer (apple wood-smoked ham, carrot-jalapeno giardiniera, lettuce, cucumber and mayo) and The Captain (chicken, salami, Polish sausage, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, pesto, oil and vinegar) to The Other Coast (turkey, swiss, coleslaw and 1000 Island dressing). Hot sandwiches include the roasted veggie, homemade meatballs (topped with marinara and provolone) and a best-seller—the Rajun Cajun, a fiery mix of Cajun turkey, pepper jack cheese, tomato, onion and spicy salsa mayo.
So coast on down the next time you’re craving a dose of the fresh flavors that hail from the east.

Who hasn’t, at one point and time, wanted to be Mary Poppins? She’s practically perfect in every way! She gets around town floating under an umbrella and has a bottomless handbag full of amazing knick-knacks. Where does she shop? She’d never tell (and she never has to explain anything), but quite possibly, we just found her secret.
SugarPill Apothecary is the place to get everything we might need for our own magical handbags. At this spit-spot shop they sell medicinal and culinary herbs as well as spices, gourmet salts, and chocolates—a definite girl necessity. It also features locally produced cocktail bitters and other pantry essentials. So basically, this shop carries everything from a cure for what ails us to the fixings for our next impromptu cocktail party. A spoonful of SugarPill really does help the medicine go down in the most delightful way.
After one shopping excursion at SugarPill Apothecary Mary Poppins won’t have anything on us, except for maybe that magical, flying umbrella. Now, where do we get one of those?

Our first (and only) wedding happened when we were five. We “married” the six-year-old boy across the street in a ceremony officiated by the kid who lived two doors down. The veil: a pillowcase held by a headband. The bouquet: dandelions. The ring: the groom’s great-grandmother’s wedding ring that he stole from his mom’s jewelry box—oops!
We loved that ring, but as soon as our mom saw it we were marched across the street to tearfully return it to our unhappy “mother-in-law” (you know the type), and our “hubby” got the spanking of a lifetime. We wouldn’t be shocked if 30 years later he still can’t sit right.
Though the honeymoon was short-lived, so began our love affair with fine, antique and vintage jewelry. Recently, our romantic side was revived when we stepped foot in Alexandria Rossoff Jewels and Rare Finds. Bursting with exquisite Art Deco, Edwardian, and Victorian pieces as well as antique and period jewelry, you’ll find that unique necklace or perfect heirloom engagement ring. Just remember to lock your jewelry box.

Let Mario’s help you choose the perfect gift for your special someone and dress you for your Valentine’s Day date! Their favorite gift “picks” for him: AG Adriano Goldschmied colored denim, vibrant sport shirts from Eton, or a luxe new tie from Ermenegildo Zegna. If you’re dropping hints for yourself, they recommend sparkly red-soled shoes from Christian Louboutin, bright Pucci scarves, and of course—jewels like these from Toby Pomeroy. Yay! We heart Mario’s.

When we were in high school we would spend hours creating the perfect mixed tape. We made them for our boyfriend so he could listen to “our songs” when he wasn’t with us and then long for us, natch. The whole process of creating the perfect mixed tape was one of our favorite hobbies.
So guess what?! We can do it again with Milk Tape. We’re going to make one for our Valentine – and decorate it with hearts and smiley faces. Sweeet!
